McNabb hasn’t just been helped by the March of Dimes, the wife of former Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb also promotes and supports this nonprofit organization for pregnancy and baby health care.
After the McNabbs’ twins were born in December 2008, the infants spent two weeks in the neonatal intensive care unit at Virtua Hospital in Voorhees, so McNabb felt the reach of the March of Dimes.
“They did a lot for myself and my family with the twins being in NICU,” McNabb said. “We have friends with children who were premature and spent time in the intensive care unit and the March of Dimes really stepped in and helped them as well.”
The twins, Donovan Jr. and Sariah, are both doing well.
“They are a bundle of joy,” McNabb said.
McNabb continues her local commitment to the March of Dimes even after Donovan McNabb’s recent trade to the Washington Redskins.
She is the honorary chairwoman of the Camden and Burlington County March for Babies Committee, which will sponsor its annual walk this month.
“I am hoping to help educate and by education, people can actually see what the organization does and they will be more willing to open up their pockets,” said McNabb, the mother of four.
The Camden and Burlington walk will take place along Camden’s waterfront on April 25, starting 8 a.m. at Campbell’s Field. The walk will wind through several riverfront attractions and across the Ben Franklin Bridge. At least 3,000 sponsored walkers are expected to participate.
Last year’s walk raised just over $350,000.
McNabb’s babysitter has been doing the walk for years. Each year, McNabb has donated to her walk for the March for Babies.
The March for Babies supports the organization’s mission to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality.
“We are deeply honored that Raquel McNabb will serve as the honorary chairwoman of the Camden and Burlington March for Babies Committee,” said Susan Sczechowicz, community director of the Camden and Burlington County March for Babies. “Raquel and her family have done so much to support the mission of March of Dimes, and I can’t thank them enough.”
The McNabbs made a six-figure donation to the NICU in the Virtua Hospital under construction in Voorhees. They also committed to help raise $2.5 million to fund the construction and technology needed for the NICU.
The completed NICU will be named The McNabb Family Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

coors light home draft
MillerCoors LLC has begun testing the sale of $20 draft-beer systems for consumers to drink at home, part of a string of new products and package innovation from beer giants grappling for market share in a crowded, slow-growing industry.
MillerCoors, the second-largest U.S. brewer by revenue, has begun testing the 1.5-gallon "Home Draft" for its biggest brands -- Miller Lite and Coors Light -- in about a half-dozen cities, including Dallas, Phoenix and San Diego. The boxed product, which is designed to fit into refrigerators for drinkers to consume periodically, rather than for one-time party use, comes amid packaging overhauls by the U.S. units of Heineken NV and Anheuser-Busch InBev NV.
Following Successful Test, the 'World's Most Refreshing Beer' Expands Distribution of 5.7 Liter Package That Lasts for 30 DaysCHICAGO, April 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Known for continuous innovation, Coors Light today announced expanded distribution of its new Coors Light Home Draft system, allowing legal-drinking-age consumers to literally 'tap the Rockies' and enjoy draft beer from their own refrigerator.
The Coors Light Home Draft system is CO2 pressurized, providing 16 12-ounce pours of real draft beer. With more than one-third of legal-drinking-age consumers preferring draft beer over bottled or canned beer, this package provides a true draft beer experience, delivering a consistent smooth pour with minimal foam. It fits perfectly inside your fridge and stays fresh for up to 30 days.
"We know consumers are increasingly looking to make their lives more convenient and we believe enjoying 'refreshment as cold as the Rockies' should be an easy thing," said Rick Gomez, vice president of marketing for Coors Light. "Now beer drinkers don't have to mess with opening a bottle or can of Coors Light and then pouring it into their glass. They can just open their refrigerator door to get a real draft beer experience."
The expansion of the Coors Light Home Draft system, following a successful test of the new package in summer 2009, is being supported with TV advertising, retail merchandising and public relations. The new package will be available primarily in convenience and grocery stores. The approximate retail cost is $20. More information can be found at www.CoorsLight.com.
Coors Light Home Draft currently is available in Florida, Illinois, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Texas and Wisconsin. Additional markets will be added in the months to come.
About MillerCoors
Built on a foundation of great beer brands and more than 288 years of brewing heritage, MillerCoors continues the commitment of its founders to brew the highest quality beers. MillerCoors is the second largest beer company in America, capturing nearly 30 percent of U.S. beer sales. Led by two of the best-selling beers in the industry, MillerCoors has a broad portfolio of highly complementary brands across every major industry segment. Miller Lite is the great tasting beer that established the American light beer category in 1975, and Coors Light is the brand that introduced consumers to refreshment as cold as the Rockies. MGD 64 completes the company's premium light beer portfolio, offering consumers fresh, crisp taste at just 64 calories. MillerCoors brews full-calorie beers Coors Banquet and Miller Genuine Draft; and economy brands Miller High Life and Keystone Light. The company also imports Peroni, Grolsch, Pilsner Urquell and Molson Canadian and offers innovative products such as Miller Chill and Sparks. MillerCoors features craft brews from the Jacob Leinenkugel Company, Blue Moon Brewing Company and the Blitz-Weinhard Brewing Company. MillerCoors operates eight major breweries in the U.S., as well as the Leinenkugel's craft brewery in Chippewa Falls, Wis., and two microbreweries, the Leinenkugel's 10th Street Brewery in Milwaukee and the Blue Moon Brewing Company at Coors Field in Denver. MillerCoors vision is to become the best beer company in America by driving profitable industry growth. MillerCoors insists on building its brands the right way through brewing quality, responsible marketing and environmental and community impact. MillerCoors is a joint venture of SABMiller plc and Molson Coors Brewing Company.
Sales of major U.S. beer brands are struggling as some recession-weary consumers drink less or switch to cheaper brews. Many of the top-selling brands showed declining sales volume at retailers in the 13 weeks through July 12 compared with a year earlier, according to market tracker Information Resources Inc. Anheuser's Bud Light, the No. 1 brand, saw its sales volume slide 5.5%, while Heineken, the No. 9 seller, fell 15%. (The figures exclude sales at certain retailers that don't share data with such research firms.)
"In this economy, we are seeing an increase in packaging innovation" in consumer-goods industries, said Kara Gruver, head of the North America consumer-products practice at consulting firm Bain & Co. "In many cases, it can be less costly [than creating a new product] and a very effective form of innovation."
Chicago-based Miller Coors, a U.S. joint venture of SABMiller PLC and Molson Coors Brewing Co., is testing home-draft packages at a time when one of its major brands, Miller Lite, is mired in a prolonged slump. Despite a new ad campaign this year aimed at revitalizing the brand, Miller Lite's retail sales fell 7.5% by volume in the recent period tracked by Information Resources.
Sister brew Coors Light, on the other hand, continues to post sales gains. Analysts attribute its long-running success in part to innovations in packaging, such as "cold-activated bottles," whose labels turn blue when the beer inside cools to a certain temperature.
MillerCoors's new Home Draft systems are meant to be placed upright in a refrigerator, which will keep the beer fresh for about 30 days. The price per ounce is roughly 15% higher than for an 18-pack of the same beer, MillerCoors said.
The product, which is recyclable, is aimed at the 30% of beer drinkers who say they prefer draft beer to the bottled or canned variety, said Andy England, chief marketing officer at MillerCoors. "We're really trying to meet that occasion when you just got back from work and want to reward yourself," rather than "the party occasion," he said.
Home Draft -- which carries about 5.7 liters -- bears some similarities to Heineken's five-liter DraughtKeg, which the Amsterdam-based brewer introduced in the U.S. in 2005. But the DraughtKeg generally is designed to consume all at once, unless drinkers buy an optional BeerTender countertop chilling system, which is sold at retailers for about $200.
The performance of the DraughtKeg may hint at the challenge MillerCoors could face to woo consumers. The DraughtKeg enjoyed an explosive start in the U.S., but Heineken pulled back on distribution as sales cooled and the company learned the product is most popular around holidays, the football season and other social occasions.
Heineken this month began testing the sale of Newcastle Brown Ale in the DraughtKeg format -- about $20 at retailers -- in Chicago, Minneapolis and Southern California. The company continues to focus on innovation in packaging "in a way that reinforces the premium nature of" its brands, said Christian McMahan, chief marketing officer at Heineken USA.
The U.S. unit of Leuven, Belgium-based Anheuser plans to unveil new can and box designs for brands such as Bud Light when the football season gets under way next month. As part of the shift, the company says it intends to better leverage its sponsorship of the vast majority of National Football League teams by creating packages showing the colors or logos of teams such as the Pittsburgh Steelers. Meanwhile, it also will roll out packages with generic colors tailored to college teams in specific regions -- such as red-colored cans in Nebraska, home of the University of Nebraska's Cornhuskers.
"It's an opportunity to tap into the passion people have for their teams," said Dave Peacock, president of Anheuser's U.S. arm, which is the biggest American brewer by sales. The company's research has shown that the most loyal consumers of its light beers "associate with sports in a dramatic way."
Brewers including Anheuser also plan some new beers in addition to new packaging. Anheuser intends to test Budweiser Select 55 -- a brew with just 55 calories -- in several markets later this year, as it tries to compete better with MillerCoors's MGD 64, a 64-calorie brew that is off to a strong start. Mass-market brews such as Bud Light, Miller Genuine Draft and Budweiser are roughly in the 100 to 140 calorie range.

acne cyst home remedies
Cystic acne can appear similar to nodular acne. However, unlike nodular acne, cystic acne is pus-filled. Cystic acne can be painful and scarring is common with cystic acne. Squeezing an acne cyst may cause a deeper infection and more painful inflammation.
The overactivity and plugging of the sebaceous glands causes cystic acne that requires immediate treatment to prevent further complications. Varieties of treatments used to clear cystic acne include both topical and oral antibiotics, oral contraceptives and laser treatments.
Cystic acne is a type of severe acne. It happens due to the eruption of the constituents of a pimple underneath the skin.
There is no denying of the fact that cystic acne is serious and therefore you need correct medical guidance to overcome it. Appropriate treatment and medications are required to get rid of this type of acne. Apart from these, you could also adopt certain home remedies that would help you overcome the condition in a natural way.
Apple Cider vinegar- It has been known to be a very effective home remedy to treat acne of all types. It helps stabilize the pH balance in the skin and thus makes you overcome acne quickly.
google_protectAndRun("ads_core.google_render_ad", google_handleError, google_render_ad);
Baking soda- Baking soda when mixed with water and applied to skin removes all the excessive oils and thus help you enjoy a problem free skin. You could also mix a small amount of sea salt to this paste and it turns out to be a very effective way to treat inflamed cystic acne.
Use Honey and Aspirin- Exfoliate your face first with a paste of aspirin crushed and mixed in to water. After you rinse off, apply honey which would moisturize your skin and also work as an antibacterial agent.
Aloevera- Nobody can deny the healing properties of aloe vera. You could apply the aloe vera gel directly on to the affected area and it would surely help you in healing cystic acne.
Mango- Apply paste of mango, lemon, water to your face and let it stay for some time. Wash it off and you are sure to see the difference. You could also use neem and turmeric and make a paste of them to apply on the acne affected area.
While you use the abovementioned home remedies to treat cystic acne, here are a few other things too that you must take care of:
* Regularly wash your face with water and some mild cleanser.
* For women, it is very necessary to wash off all the make-up before they go to sleep.
* Groundnut oil mixed with equal amounts of fresh lime juice can make your skin fresh and glowing.
* Avoid eating junk food, chocolates, fried food and specially starch and sugar.
* You should take plenty of fresh fruits, vegetables and lots and lots of water.
* Sleep well as a good night's sleep could do loads of wonders.
* Change your pillow covers often so that you may not pick some additional bacteria from them.
* Do not touch the affected skin often. Picking and squeezing the cysts is a strict no-no.
* To moisturize your skin use an oil free moisturizer so that you have the required moisture supplied.
Cystic acne is surely a tough condition to fight but appropriate treatment coupled with a few home remedies could help you overcome it successfully.

Sprains and Strains Instruction Sheet:Sprains and Strains first aid
Of all sprains, ankle and knee sprains occur most often. Sprained ligaments swell rapidly and are painful. Generally, the greater the pain, the more severe the injury is. For most minor sprains, you probably can treat the injury yourself.
Initial treatment for sprains and strains should occur as soon as possible. Remember RICE!
Rest the injured part. Pain is the body's signal to not move an injury.
Ice the injury. This will limit the swelling and help with the spasm.
Compress the injured area. This again, limits the swelling. Be careful not to apply a wrap so tightly that it might act as a tourniquet and cut off the blood supply.
Elevate the injured part. This lets gravity help reduce the swelling by allowing fluid and blood to drain downhill to the heart.
Over-the-counter pain medication is an option. Acetaminophen (Tylenol) is helpful for pain, but ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil, Nuprin) might be better because these medications relieve both pain and inflammation. Remember to follow the guidelines on the bottle for appropriate amounts of medicine, especially for children and teens .
Medical Treatment
Sprains and strains can usually be treated without surgery. The home treatment with RICE is sufficient. Some injuries, however, need operations to fix complete tears of muscles or tendons that do not allow them to do their job of moving the body. Significant tears of ligaments that stabilize joints also may need repair.
Sometimes, resting the injury requires some help. Slings for arm injuries or crutches for leg injuries can be used, in addition to a variety of removable splints to protect the injured area from further damage and movement. Resting also helps relieve some of the muscle spasm associated with the injury.
Occasionally, if the injury is especially severe, the physician may want to use a nonremovable splint made of plaster or fiberglass. Although the splint may look like a cast, it doesn't have plaster or fiberglass completely encircling the injured area. Instead, by only going partially around an injury, there is some room to allow for swelling that may occur during the next few days.
Follow the instructions for P.R.I.C.E.
Protect the injured limb from further injury by not using the joint. You can do this using anything from splints to crutches. Rest the injured limb. But don't avoid all activity. Even with an ankle sprain, you can usually still exercise other muscles to minimize deconditioning. For example, you can use an exercise bicycle with arm exercise handles, working both your arms and the uninjured leg while resting the injured ankle on another part of the bike. That way you still get three-limb exercise to keep up your cardiovascular conditioning. Ice the area. Use a cold pack, a slush bath or a compression sleeve filled with cold water to help limit swelling after an injury. Try to ice the area as soon as possible after the injury and continue to ice it for 10 to 15 minutes four times a day for 48 hours. If you use ice, be careful not to use it too long, as this could cause tissue damage. Compress the area with an elastic wrap or bandage. Compressive wraps or sleeves made from elastic or neoprene are best. Elevate the injured limb above your heart whenever possible to help prevent or limit swelling.
After two days, gently begin using the injured area. You should feel a gradual, progressive improvement. Over-the-counter pain relievers, such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, others) and acetaminophen (Tylenol, others), may be helpful to manage pain during the healing process.
See your doctor if your sprain isn't improving after two or three days.
Get emergency medical assistance if:
You're unable to bear weight on the injured leg, the joint feels unstable or you can't use the joint. This may mean the ligament was completely torn. On the way to the doctor, apply a cold pack. You have a fever higher than 100 F (37.8 C), and the area is red and hot. You may have an infection. You have a severe sprain. Inadequate or delayed treatment may cause long-term joint instability or chronic pain.
Identification / look out for:
Pain. Swelling, redness and heat of joint. Joint movement restricted. Bruising.

china earthquake today and map of china
Communication lines are down in the area which makes getting information out of the affected area.
The china earthquake today was a major natural disaster in the region.
The china earthquake today hit the Chinese province of Qinghai. The earthquake resulted in the death of around four hundred people. The number of injured people is being reported around ten thousand.
The natural disaster has destroyed a massive number of buildings and eliminated the means of communication and transportation in the area. The earthquake that hit the Chinese province of Qinghai was reported to be 7.1 on the rector scale. The first shock was followed by a series of after shocks which varied from 4.8 to 6.3 on the rector scale. The china earthquake today hit the Chinese region of Qinghai in the morning which was the peak time for the children to reach the school. After a conclusion around seventy percent of the schools were destroyed and hundreds of children lost their lives and as still trapped in the rumble.
When the conditions became stable the rescue team started their efforts to save the survivors and provide medical aid. After an estimate of the destruction around ninety percent of the people have lost their homes and are deprived of basic necessities. The real issue is to save the survivors said the government officials and they are making the possible arrangements to save the remaining survivors. The region has a cold temperature at night which might even fall to minus six degrees at night. The government has arranged five thousand tents and fifty thousand blankets to provide the survivors but its still not sufficient.

Rashes Instruction Sheet:Rashes first aid
Most candidal infections can be treated at home with over-the-counter or prescription medication and can clear up within a week. If some other disease has weakened a person's immune system, the person should consult a doctor about any new symptoms before attempting self-treatment because of the risk of infection.
After a long, cold winter, it’s tempting to make the most of the summer sunshine when it finally arrives. But be warned; young skin can be quickly damaged by exposure to the sun. As little as twenty minutes can to lead to a painful case of sunburn. And of course, repeated, prolonged spells in the sun could increase their likelihood of developing skin cancer later on in life.
When you’re at the beach, never let your children (or anyone else in the family for that matter) venture into the sun without a sunscreen that has a high sun protection factor. Always kit them out with sun hats and closely woven t-shirts and make sure that they wear them at all times.
Finally, don’t think you can bend the rules because you’re an adult! Start out with a high factor sunscreen and limit yourself to half hour spells in the sun for the first few days of your holiday. Don’t forget to reapply sunscreen after swimming, even if it says it’s waterproof on the bottle.
Vaginal yeast infections
Most women can treat vaginal yeast infections at home with nonprescription vaginal creams or suppositories. A single dose of fluconazole (Diflucan) tablet also cures most vaginal yeast infections. Fluconazole requires a prescription from your physician.
Thrush
For thrush, swish the antifungal agent nystatin around in your mouth then swallow the liquid. Take care to maintain excellent oral hygiene. All objects put into a child's mouth should be washed or sterilized after each use. Breastfeeding mothers should be evaluated for Candida infection of the breast. If you wear dentures, clean them thoroughly after each use and practice good oral hygiene. Adults and older children have several treatment options not available to babies, such as troches (antifungal lozenges) or pills such as fluconazole (Diflucan) to help clear the infection in addition to nystatin.
Skin and diaper rash
Clotrimazole (Lotrimin) creams and lotions can be applied to superficial skin infections. Other medications require a prescription and a visit to your doctor. Other antifungal creams, such as ketoconazole (Nizoral), which is available by prescription, is helpful as well. For paronychia, avoiding moisture can be helpful. Oral itraconazole (Sporanox) or fluconazole (Diflucan) can also be helpful and can be prescribed by a doctor. Topical antifungal and topical corticosteroids are also used. Perlèche is treated with topical antiyeast or antifungal agents, and often with a mild corticosteroid cream. Limit lip licking of the corners of the mouth. Placing a bit of petroleum jelly on top of the antiyeast agents can be helpful as well. The affected area should be kept clean and dry. For diaper rashes, frequent diaper changes and the use of barrier creams speed recovery . Intertrigo can benefit from the use of nystatin powder , which decreases the amount of moisture and also acts as an antiyeast agent.
Medical Treatment
A wide array of treatment options is available to treat candidiasis. Options include creams, lotions, tablets or capsules, troches (lozenges), and vaginal suppositories or creams. Talk to your doctor to find the option that is right for you.
Azole medications are a family of antifungal drugs that end in the suffix "-azole." They block the manufacture of ergosterol, a crucial material of the yeast cell wall. Without ergosterol, the yeast cell wall becomes leaky and the yeast die. Fortunately, ergosterol is not a component of human membranes, and azoles do not harm human cells. Polyene antifungal medications include nystatin and amphotericin B. Nystatin is used for thrush and superficial candidal infections. Doctors reserve amphotericin B for more serious systemic fungal infections. The antifungals work by attaching to the yeast cell wall building material, ergosterol. These medications then form artificial holes in the yeast wall that cause the yeast to leak and die.

Inhaled Poison Get to fresh air as soon as possible. Avoid breathing fumes. Ventilate that area as soon as possible by opening windows or directing fans toward the door, while protecting yourself from injury. Call the poison center. If the person is unconscious, having difficulty breathing or not breathing, call 911. If you have a poisoning situation, do not panic. Panic is a very contagious emotion. If parents are upset, crying and screaming, a child can pick up on that very easily and will also start crying and become upset. When the entire family is upset, it becomes much harder to assess the situation and provide good care.
Signs and symptoms of poisoning:
Burns or redness around the mouth and lips, from drinking certain poisons Breath that smells like chemicals, such as gasoline or paint thinner Burns, stains and odors on the person, on his or her clothing, or on the furniture, floor, rugs or other objects in the surrounding area Empty medication bottles or scattered pills Vomiting, difficulty breathing, sleepiness, confusion or other unexpected signs
When to call for help:
Call 911 or your local emergency number immediately if the person is:
Drowsy or unconscious Having difficulty breathing or has stopped breathing Uncontrollably restless or agitated Having seizures
If the person seems stable and has no symptoms, but you suspect poisoning, call your regional poison control center or, in the United States, the National Poison Control Center at 800-222-1222. Provide information about the person's symptoms, the person's age and weight, and any information you have about the poison, such as amount and how long since the person was exposed to it. It helps to have the pill bottle or poison container on hand when you call.
What to do while waiting for help:
If the person has been exposed to poisonous fumes, such as carbon monoxide, get him or her into fresh air immediately. If the person swallowed the poison, remove anything remaining in the mouth. If the suspected poison is a household cleaner or other chemical, read the label and follow instructions for accidental poisoning. If the product is toxic, the label will likely advise you to call the poison control center at 800-222-1222. Also call this 800 number if you can't identify the poison, if it's medication or if there are no instructions. Follow treatment directions that are given by the poison control center. If the poison spilled on the person's clothing, skin or eyes, remove the clothing. Flush the skin or eyes with cool or lukewarm water, such as by using a shower for 20 minutes or until help arrives. Make sure the person is breathing. If not, start rescue breathing and CPR. Take the poison container (or any pill bottles) with you to the hospital.
What NOT to do
Don't give ipecac syrup or do anything to induce vomiting. The American Academy of Pediatrics advises discarding ipecac in the home, saying there's no good evidence of effectiveness and that it can do more harm than good.
Then...call the Poison Center immediately 1-800-222-1222. Do not wait for symptoms to appear. If the person is unconscious or in immediate distress call 911
Do not try to neutralize a poison by giving raw eggs, salt water, mustard, vinegar or citrus fruit juices as an antidote or to cause vomiting. Never attempt to induce vomiting by sticking your fingers anywhere in the patient's mouth; this procedure can be very dangerous.
Syrup of Ipecac Syrup of Ipecac is NOT a routine treatment for poisoning. Please contact your Poison Center before using.
Activated CharcoalActivated charcoal is not recommended for home use. It is used to bind drugs and chemicals before they are absorbed into a person, but activated charcoal does not bind all drugs or chemicals and has some risk when given. Important: Only use it when told to do so by the Poison Center.

Heat Exhaustion and Heatstroke Instruction Sheet:Heat Exhaustion and Heatstroke first aid
Heat exhaustion is one of the heat-related syndromes, which range in severity from mild heat cramps to heat exhaustion to potentially life-threatening heatstroke.
Our bodies are able to cool down using a system of sweating and radiating heat through the skin. In extreme conditions such as high temperatures, high humidity in combination with exercise can cause the body to be unable to loose all the heat. As heat builds up in the body heat illnesses can occur. Avoid heat illnesses by avoiding too high temperatures and body exercise. Assure yourself that you are drinking more fluids than you are losing. Signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion often begin suddenly, sometimes after excessive exercise, heavy perspiration, and inadequate fluid or salt intake. Signs and symptoms resemble those of shock and may include:
Feeling faint or dizzy Nausea Heavy sweating Rapid, weak heartbeat Low blood pressure Cool, moist, pale skin Low-grade fever Heat cramps Headache Fatigue Dark-colored urine
If you suspect heat exhaustion:
Get the person out of the sun and into a shady or air-conditioned location. Lay the person down and elevate the legs and feet slightly. Loosen or remove the person's clothing. Have the person drink cool water or other nonalcoholic beverage without caffeine. Cool the person by spraying or sponging him or her with cool water and fanning. Monitor the person carefully. Heat exhaustion can quickly become heatstroke.
If fever greater than 102 F (38.9 C), fainting, confusion or seizures occur, call 911 or emergency medical help.
Heat illnesses develop in the following stages:
Heat CrampsHeat cramps are pretty innocent they occur as brief but severe cramps in the leg, arm or abdomen muscles. They are painful but not too serious. Cool down by resting out of the sun and drinking cold beverages. Heat ExhaustionIf the heat continues to build up inside the body a person can suffer from heat exhaustion. Symptoms include dehydration, fatigue, weakness, headaches, nausea, vomiting and hyperventilation. Heat Exhaustion can get very serious. Get away from the heat as soon as possible. Drink cool beverages. If seriously overheated, remove all clothes and bathe in cool, not cold, water. Visit a doctor for serious cases. Heat StrokeIf the situation becomes worse, a person might suffer from heat stroke. The body is no longer able to control the body's temperature and the body temperature rises to dangerous levels (42 degrees and up). Signs of a heat stroke are: hot and dry skin, severe headaches, dizziness, weakness, disorientation, fatigue, seizure, loss of consciousness. It is essential to get the body temperature down as quickly as possible to avoid brain damage or even death. Take of all the victim's clothes and if possible submerge the victim in cool water or cover the victim with ice bags. Keep the victim moist and if enough water is not available, use a blower or any other method of cooling down the victim.
It is important to know how you should take care of yourself when you go out for fun and adventure. There are many possible situations that may occur. These are only some guides on how you can prevent them.
Home care is appropriate for mild forms of heat exhaustion. Heat stroke is a medical emergency, and an ambulance should be called immediately.
For mild cases of heat exhaustion
Rest in a cool, shaded area. Give cool fluids such as water or sports drinks (that will replace the salt that has been lost). Salty snacks are appropriate as tolerated. Loosen or remove clothing. Apply cool water to skin. Do not use an alcohol rub. Do not give any beverages containing alcohol or caffeine. Heat stroke (do not attempt to treat a case of heat stroke at home, but you can help while waiting for medical assistance to arrive.)
Call 911 immediately Move the person to a cooler environment, or place him or her in a cool bath of water (as long as he or she is conscious and can be attended continuously). Alternatively, moisten the skin with lukewarm water and use a fan to blow cool air across the skin. Give cool beverages by mouth only if the person has a normal mental state and can tolerate it.

Falls Instruction Sheet:Falls first aid
Heres a guide to treating falls, both minor and major, and when to seek medical help. First aid for falls and trips is fairly straight forward, there are just a few things youll need to watch for.
1. If your childs knocked out, even if its not for a long time, cover their body with a blanket to reduce the chances of them going into shock, then call 999.
2. Look for signs of a fractured skull such as unequal pupils in their eyes, bleeding from the ear or clear fluid running from the nose.
3. Check for swelling or limbs sticking out at an unusual angle. If you think a bones broken, keep it still while you wait for an ambulance but wrap it with towels to support it.
4. If you cant see any broken bones or you dont think theyve got a head or neck injury, put them in the recovery position.
5. If theyre conscious and there are no obvious signs of serious injury apply a cold compress made from a cloth dipped in water to the areas that were hit for 10 minutes to help with the swelling.
First Aid For Falls
For minor falls:
Apply an ice pack on bruised area. Use a pain reliever to control pain if needed. Rest if at all possible. Monitor the patient for the next 24 hours looking for any change in behavior such as unsteady walking, blurred vision, slurred speech or losing consciousness
First Aid for major falls:
What is a major fall?
Any fall that involves the head, neck and spine or hipbones. Any fall where the person loses consciousness even if just for a moment. If there is clear liquid coming from the nose, ear or mouth. If the patient is having difficulty breathing. If the patient is not breathing begin CPR immediately.
Treatment
Call 911. DO NOT move the patient. Try to keep the patient still with the neck and spine straight. If you have to move the patient use two people to keep back and neck straight. While waiting for help check breathing and pulse. Stop any bleeding. DO NOT try to straighten out any twisted limbs. DO NOT try and push any bones that might have broken through the surface of the skin back under the skin. We have a first aid section on treating broken bones here. Look for signs of shock. (Pale complexion, sweaty clammy skin, rapid or uneven breathing, unconsciousness). Elevate the feet of the patient about 12in. DO NOT elevate the feet if you expect spinal or back injury or if doing so causes the patient any discomfort.
Call 911 immediately if...
The patient has trouble staying awake or is overly sleepy. Is vomiting. Is not walking normally. Has slurred speech. Has trouble focusing or paying attention. Complains of neck or back pain. Has increased pain. The injury involves the spinal column, the back, neck, hips, ribcage or a joint.

polish president lech kaczynski
Kaczynski, 60, pursued a strongly pro-U.S. line in foreign relations, in accordance with a cross-party consensus that has grown in Poland since the fall of communism. He was an enthusiastic backer of plans to site a U.S. missile defense facility in the country, the largest of the European Union's new eastern members.
However, the prickly nationalism of Kaczynski and his identical twin brother, Jaroslaw — who served for a time as prime minister and is now opposition leader — sometimes complicated ties with European neighbors and Russia.
The president, for example, long held out against the EU's so-called Lisbon reform treaty before signing it last November. Still, his appeal at home rested partly on his forthright representation of Polish views and his tough stance on law and order.
Kaczynski first rose to fame as a child movie star alongside his identical twin in a hit movie in 1962, "Two Who Stole the Moon," about two troublemakers who try to get rich by stealing the moon and selling it. That was the end of their film career, however.
In the 1970s and 1980s, the Kaczynski brothers were activists in the anti-communist opposition and went on to serve as advisers to Solidarity founder Lech Walesa.
Kaczynski supported Walesa's presidential bid in 1990 and became the chief presidential adviser on security issues. His cooperation with Walesa later ended in acrimony over political differences, and Walesa was defeated in 1995 by ex-communist Aleksander Kwasniewski.
Kaczynski served as Poland's justice minister in 2000-2001, and his tough stance against crime laid the foundations for the popularity that would fuel his later rise to the presidency.
He became mayor of Warsaw in 2001, and won respect for a no-nonsense style and plain-speaking reputation.
His opponents, however, viewed him as narrow-minded, provincial and overzealous in his drive to cleanse the country of the influence of former communists. And he drew criticism from human rights groups for trying to stop a gay-rights parade through Poland's capital.
In seeking the presidency in 2005, he made clean government a key pledge — a promise that resonated after a string of corruption scandals that saw ex-communists swept from power.
"Our country needs renewal, the renewal of public life," Kaczynski has said.
Kaczynski's popularity declined as head of state, however. In 2007, his identical twin brother was voted out as prime minister after a two-year stint in which he failed to hold together a shaky coalition with small, unpredictable populist parties.
The government of Prime Minister Donald Tusk — the man Kaczynski beat for the presidency — has gained respect for avoiding a recession at the depths of the economic crisis and for a smoother foreign policy. Kaczynski faced an uphill struggle to win re-election later this year.
Kaczynski was a firm friend of Poland's Jewish community, which has enjoyed a revival in recent years after it was nearly wiped out in the Holocaust and later suffered from communist-era repression.
In 2008, he became the first head of state to attend a religious service at a synagogue in Poland. As mayor, he promoted a planned museum on Jewish history by donating city land to the project.
Kaczynski was killed along with wife, Maria, an economist. He is survived by the couple's daughter, Marta; two granddaughters, Ewa and Martyna; his twin brother, Jaroslaw; and the twins' mother, Jadwiga.
Associated Press writer Geir Moulson contributed to this report from Berlin.
The Polish president and his wife were killed in a plane crash this morning, according to Russian officials.
President Lech Kaczynski and his wife Maria were on board a flight which crashed at 10.56 Moscow time (0656 GMT) near Smolensk airport.
Russian media is reporting that all 132 passengers were killed.
The Kaczynski’s were travelling with several senior government figures on a trip to mark the 70th anniversary of the Katyn forest massacre, in which thousands of Poles were executed by Soviet secret police.
Smolensk governor Sergei Anufriev made a statement to state news channel Rossiya-24 about an hour after the crash saying that there were no survivors.
He said: "As it was preparing for landing, the Polish president's aircraft did not make it to the landing strip."
"According to preliminary reports, it got caught up in the tops of trees, fell to the ground and broke up into pieces. There are no survivors in that crash.”
The head of Russia’s top investigative body, Sergei Markin, said there were a total of 132 people on the plane.
The Polish Foreign Ministry has confirmed that Lech Kaczynski and his wife were on board the Tu-154 plane, flying from Moscow to Smolensk.
The Army chief of staff, General Franciszek Gagor, National Bank president Slawomir Skrzypek and Deputy Foreign Minister Andrzej Kremoer were also believed to be on the flight manifest.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has called an emergency meeting of his Cabinet in Warsaw.
Kaczynski, 60, became president in December 2005 after defeating Tusk in that year’s presidential vote.
The nationalist conservative was the twin brother of Poland’s opposition leader, former Prime Minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski.
Kaczynski was planning to run for a second term in the presidential elections this autumn.
Parliament speaker Bronislaw Komorowski, who was expected to be his main opposition in the race, could now take over presidential duties according to the Polish constitution.
Kaczynski’s wife, Maria, was an economist. They had a daughter, Marta, and two granddaughters.

Earaches Instruction Sheet:Earaches first aid
Earache can be exceptionally painful. It has a number of common causes, including infection, or as a symptom of other conditions such as flu or tonsillitis. Like earache, toothache can cause agonising pain. Usually caused by a decaying or damaged tooth, it can also arise as a result of problems such as an ear infection or sinusitis, or even from jaw tension. In babies and children, there may be pain and discomfort as their teeth come through. Sore throats can be a sign of infection such as tonsillitis or a symptom of colds and flu. There may be swelling and infection around the throat, or swollen glands visible under the jaw.
Earaches can be slightly painful to extremely painful. An ear ache is caused by a fluid buildup due to some infection or pressure build up in the middle ear. Swimming, bathing, allergies or even cleaning your ear with cotton bud can lead to discomfort, bacterial growth and infection in the ear.
Most common cause of the ache is due to plugged 'Eustachian' tubes (a small tube connecting the ear to the nose). If and when your Eustachian tubes become blocked possibility of bacteria buildup or infection, fluid will gather resulting in a painful earache. Increase in pressure leads to pain, hearing loss, itching and swelling. To avoid ear aches and infections, one should keep the Eustachian tube free of pollutants and irritants and regularly clean the nasal passage.
First Aid For Treating earache
If there is a fever or discharge, seek urgent medical help, as this may be a sign of serious infection or a burst ear-drum. Seek medical advice if there is any loss of hearing. Check the history of the problem to rule out injury to the ear or skull, or the presence of a foreign object. Help the person into a comfortable position. A hot-water bottle wrapped in a towel placed on the ear may provide some pain relief. Enable the person to take her usual painkillers. If the condition persists or gets worse, especially in children, seek medical advice.
ANALGESICS (PAINKILLERS)
When used according to the instructions, analgesics such as acetaminophen have little risk for a healthy adult. Medicines such as acetaminophen syrup made especially for children can provide safe pain relief.People in severe pain are at risk from an accidental overdose of analgesics and while paracetamol is generally safe, one of its potential drawbacks is that very few extra pills are required to risk an overdose. To reduce the chances of problems with any analgesics:
Read and follow the instructions carefully. Seek advice from your doctor or pharmacist if necessary. Do not leave analgesics near the bed while sleeping. It is easy to wake up in pain and forget when the last dose was taken. Seek early medical advice if you think that an overdose may have been taken, even if there are no signs and symptoms of a problem. Acetaminophen poisoning, for example does not show up immediately but the antidote needs to be takes as soon as possible.
TREATING A SORE THROAT
Check the history of the problem to rule put poisoning or burns. Give the person plenty of cold fluids to drink. Enable the person to take his usual analgesics. Seek medical advice if the condition persists or if sore throats are recurrent, particularly in children.
TREATING TOOTHACHE
1. Check the history of the problem to rule out any injury to the mouth or jaw.
2. Assist the person into a comfortable position. The throbbing pain associated with an infected tooth is often eased if the person is sitting up.
3. Enable the person to take her usual analgesics.
4. A hot-water bottle wrapped in a towel or hot compress placed alongside the face may help relieve the pain. Oil of cloves applied to the cotton swab and placed on the tooth (not the gums) may also help numb the pain. Children may benefit from teething remedies available from pharmacies.
Encourage the person to make an appointment with a dentist.
Try some of these home remedies for earache.
The greatest pain reliever is the presence of warm, moist heat around the ache. A warm compress - such as a towel rung out in hot water and pressed against the ear, brings immediate relief.
After you take a shower or bath; blow dry your ears with the warm setting of a hair dryer instead of rubbing them.
Puncture a piece of garlic and pour the juice in the ear. Garlic being a natural antibiotic will help to take the pain away.
Put some mineral oil (oil derived from a mineral source, such as petroleum, because it is inexpensive and rarely causes allergic reactions) in your ear before going in the water. Wear earplugs while swimming and avoid swimming in dirty waters.

Home > Diseases & Conditions > First Aid & Safety > Chest Pains Instruction Sheet:Chest Pains first aid
The specific cause of chest pain is often difficult to interpret. Causes of the pain can vary from minor problems, such as indigestion or stress, to serious medical emergencies, such as a heart attack or pulmonary embolism.
Causes of chest pain can vary from minor problems, such as indigestion or stress, to serious medical emergencies, such as a heart attack or pulmonary embolism. The specific cause of chest pain is often difficult to interpret.
Finding the cause of your chest pain can be challenging, especially if you've never had symptoms in the past. Even doctors may have a difficult time deciding if chest pain is a sign of a heart attack or something less serious, such as indigestion. If you have unexplained chest pain lasting more than a few minutes, you should seek emergency medical assistance rather than trying to diagnose the cause yourself.
As with other sudden, unexplained pains, chest pain may be a signal for you to get medical help. Use the following information to help you determine whether your chest pain is a medical emergency.
As with other sudden, unexplained pain, chest pain may be a signal for you to get medical help. Use the following information to help you determine whether your chest pain is a medical emergency.
Chest pain may sound minor at first, but it can be the sign of a more serious problem. In some cases a person with chest pain may have had a history of heart attacks or other chest problems. By knowing the right methods of first aid for chest pain you can help a person who is suffering from pain and to help reduce the level of injury from chest pain.
The first part of first aid for chest pain is to recognize what the signs of chest pains are. Chest pains are normally identifiable by a person having shortness of breath and tight feelings. These can be signs of a possible heart attack in many cases.
When administering first aid for chest pain you will need to watch for certain things before calling for emergency help. If the person has had chest pains for a long period of time or there is a great amount of sweating coming with the chest pains then you will need to call for emergency help and get the person to a hospital. While first aid for chest pain can help, it is important to know when to contact a hospital to help get the victims oxygen and blood flow levels back to normal.
Part of first aid for chest pain involves determining if you should call for help or go to the hospital on your own. Chest pains can develop into heart attacks after about fifteen minutes, but if you are feeling chest pains and are alone you may need to drive yourself to the hospital. However, calling for emergency help can work because driving with chest pains is not always recommended.
One important part of first aid for chest pain is to make sure the victim is not doing anything to make the pain worse. If a person is having chest pains be sure to keep that person from doing anything and to have that person rest so that the pains do not become any more severe.
The windows in the area you are at should be opened. This is important for first aid for chest pain because fresh air will be let in. Also, CPR should be started on the victim.
Tight clothes that the victim may be wearing should be loosened so that circulation of blood and oxygen in the body will improve.
If a doctor has prescribed nitroglycerin for the chest pain victim be sure to get the person to take it according to the doctors orders. Aspirin can help if the chest pains are moving towards the neck or arms.
The last part of first aid for chest pain involves being able to get help as soon as possible. The amount of time between pains and a heart attack will be short if the heart is not beating well. If you are giving CPR you will need to alternate between CPR and thumping on the victims heart so that beating levels can increase.
Remember, first aid for chest pain caused by gas does not require such severe treatments. Antacids or soda water can help in these cases.
We all know that chest pain could be a sign of a heart attack, but that most chest pain is caused by something minor like indigestion. This article will help you figure out whether or not the chest pain you experience is a symptom of a much larger problem and if it requires emergency medical attention.
A heart attack happens when the supply of oxygen to your heart is cut off because one of yours arteries becomes blocked. Heart attacks sometimes produce no symptoms whatsoever, but you will usually experience chest pain that lasts for at least 15 minutes. Recurrent chest pain is often the earliest sign of an attack, especially if the pain is worsened by exertion and relieved by rest. Chest pain can begin weeks in advance of a heart attack. Chest pain associated with a heart attack usually consists of at least one of the following: • a feeling of fullness or pressure in the center of the chest that lasts for several minutes

Broken Bones Instruction Sheet:broken bones first aid
A child's fracture heals more quickly than an adult's because kids' bones are surrounded by a thick membrane called the periosteum, which helps to rapidly remodel and restore the broken bone. This membrane gradually thins with age. A child's broken thighbone will take four to six weeks to heal, compared with 20 weeks for an adult's and two weeks for a baby's.
Bone fractures in children are most often treated with a fiberglass or plaster cast and rarely require surgery.
You should follow up with your child's orthopedist within one year of a fracture to check that the break has healed and the bone is growing properly, especially if the fracture occurs in the growth plate at either end of the bone. Nearly half of your child's total bone mass is formed by age 10. A diet that includes 500 to 800 milligrams of calcium a day will boost her bone strength. If you suspect a broken bone :
A broken bone can cause severe pain, swelling, tenderness, and also bruising, making it difficult for your child to use that part of his body.
But even if he's able to move an injured hand or foot, for example, your child may still have a hidden fracture that needs medical attention. If you think the bone is broken, you should:Call a hospital if your child is unconscious, bleeding uncontrollably, or cannot walk due to a possible break in a leg or ankle bone. Also, NEVER try to move your child yourself in the unlikely event of an open fracture (i.e., the bone has penetrated the skin). Apply pressure to the wound with a clean cloth to stop the bleeding until help arrives. Call your doctor immediately.
Take your child to the hospital yourself if he is able to walk (i.e., if he breaks an arm or wrist). First immobilize the broken bone, since movement can cause further bone injury or damage surrounding blood vessels, nerves and tissues.
To create an arm splint: Place your child's forearm against his chest. If this is too painful, place a pillow or sheet between his arm and chest. Using gauze, a sheet, or a blanket, begin at the elbow and wrap the splint in a diagonal direction around your child's back, coming around his chest and wrapping the upper and lover arm all the way up to the hand. Secure the splint snugly with an ACE bandage or safety pins. Apply ice to the area.
For fractured limbs, take the following precautions until emergency help arrives.
Place the injured part in as natural a position as possible without causing discomfort to the patient. If the patient must be moved to a medical facility, protect the injured part from further injury by applying splints long enough to extend well beyond the joints above and below the fracture. Use firm material, such as a board, pole or metal rod, as a splint. Pad the splints with clothing or other soft material o prevent skin injury. Fasten splints with a bandage or cloth at the break and at points along the splint above and below the break. Use a pressure bandage to control any bleeding.
For very serious fractures involving injuries to the body, neck or back, observe the following:
Do not move the victim without medical supervision, unless absolutely necessary, and then only if the proper splints have been applied. If a victim with a suspected neck or back injury must be moved, keep the back, head and neck in a straight line, preventing them from being twisted or bent during movement. Use a board or stretcher to support the victim, if available.
broken bone, or fracture, is an injury that requires immediate medical attention. Aside from the actual breakage of the bone itself, other symptoms may accompany the bone injury, depending on the severity of and circumstance in which the injury occurred. Here's what you can do to help keep the victim comfortable and prevent further injury until help arrives.
1 Call for emergency help if the injury is severe. Indications of a severe injury may include one or more of the following:
The victim is unconscious, is not breathing, or has no heartbeat. You may need to Administer Adult CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation). The victim is pale, sweaty (cold sweat), short of breath and/or confused. These are symptoms suggestive of shock. The injury is to the head, neck, back, hip, pelvis, or upper leg. Severe bleeding. The hurt limb or joint looks deformed or seems to be out of the usual position. Any little movement or light pressure causes pain. The bone has pierced through the skin. (An "open" fracture) The extremity of the injured arm or leg is numb or bluish at the tip.
2 Stop any bleeding. Hold a clean, preferably sterile, absorbent material over the injury and apply gentle yet direct pressure (without applying over the break). 3

do heart valves work:How the heart works
The purpose of the heart is to pump the blood that bathes every organ of the body. The blood carries oxygen and nutrients to the tissues, and removes waste products from the tissues. If the pumping action of the heart is disrupted, the body’s organs begin to fail very quickly. Therefore, life itself is dependent on the efficient operation of the heart.
The heart muscle contracts in two stages to squeeze blood out of the heart. This is known as systole.
In the first stage, the upper chambers (atria) contract at the same time, pushing blood down into the lower chambers (ventricles). Blood is pumped from the right atrium down into the right ventricle and from the left atrium down into the left ventricle. In the second stage, the lower chambers contract to push this blood out of the heart to either the body via your main artery (aorta) or to the lungs to pick up oxygen.
The heart then relaxes – known as diastole. Blood fills up the heart again, and the whole process, which takes a fraction of a second, is repeated.
The different sides of the heart have different functions.
On the right side, the upper chamber fills with oxygen-depleted blood from your body and pushes it via the lower chamber and the pulmonary artery back to the lungs. Here blood picks up oxygen and releases carbon dioxide. On the left side, the upper chamber fills with oxygen-rich blood from the lungs. This is pumped via the lower chamber into the aorta and out to the body to provide cells with the crucial oxygen they need.
What makes the heart beat?
On average, most people have a heart rate of around 72 beats per minute at rest. This varies according to fitness, age, exertion and general health.
Each heart beat is triggered by an electrical pacemaker - a group of cells in the heart that have the ability to generate electrical activity. They cause electrical impulses to spread over the heart and make it contract.
The largest natural pacemaker of the heart is called the sinoatrial or SA node and is found in the right atrium. From it, specialised groups of cells that carry the electrical charge lead off to the rest of the heart.
Valves of the Heart
The schematic diagram below illustrates the four valves of the heart and how they are oriented within the heart. The heart valves in reality are not in this simplified orientation, but the diagram serves to show the valves and their relationship to each other.
The heart is generally thought of as having a right and left side. In reality, the heart is one organ and not divided into two separate organs. The heart is made up of four chambers, two on the right and two on the left. The chambers are known as atria and ventricles. Each side of the heart is composed of one atrium and one ventricle. The atria are the receiving chambers of the heart, receiving blood flowing back to the heart. The ventricles are the chambers of the heart that pump the blood out of the heart.
The valves of the heart are located within the chambers of the heart and are critical to the proper flow of blood through the heart. All of the valves, when functioning normally, act as one-way valves, allowing blood to flow either from one chamber to another, or allowing blood to flow out of the heart, in only one direction. The valves control the flow of blood through the heart by opening and closing during the contractions of the heart. The opening and closing functions of the valves are controlled by pressure differences generated within the heart, as well as some muscles located within the heart.

Preliminary Female Fertility Tests:postcoital fertility test
If you are having difficulties becoming pregnant you and your partner may consider seeking fertility treatments. There are a number of different fertility treatments available, ranging from IVF to IUI, but it is important to have proper testing performed before you choose a treatment. The post-coital test is one of the most commonly performed infertility tests. This fertility test can help to determine the quality of a woman’s cervical mucus and the motility of a man’s sperm. This information can then be used to decide on an appropriate method of fertility treatment.
During the process of preliminary female fertility testing, a post-coital test (PCT) can be an informative tool in the diagnosis of common female fertility problems. As such, this fertility test can help establish the appropriate course of treatment for female infertility through the analysis of the cervical mucus. In addition, a post-coital test is also sometimes used in male fertility testing in order to evaluate sperm motility. google_protectAndRun("render_ads.js::google_render_ad", google_handleError, google_render_ad);
Post-Coital Test Procedure
Also known as a Simns-Huhner test, a post-coital test evaluates cervical mucus with regard to its health and its ability to allow fertilisation to occur. It also assesses the ability of the sperm to function in the cervical mucus, namely, to travel through the cervical mucus in order to fertilize the egg.
This type of female fertility test is performed shortly prior to ovulation, when the cervical mucus is most amenable to the process of fertilisation. Cervical mucus changes in consistency and color throughout a woman’s menstrual cycle; during a woman’s less fertile periods, it is white and thick while during ovulation – when a woman is most fertile – it is stretchy, thin and clear. This thinner consistency enables the sperm to have easier access to the uterus so that fertilisation and conception can occur.
Samples of cervical mucus are collected 2 to 8 hours following intercourse in order to assess both the cervical mucus as well as sperm ability to pass through the mucus.
The post-coital fertility test (PCT) is a procedure used to help determine why a couple is having difficulty becoming pregnant. The test evaluates a woman’s cervical mucus, revealing information about its health and suitability for fertilization. The post-coital test also examines how well a man’s sperm functions in the cervical mucus. The test is performed just before ovulation, when a woman’s cervical mucus is most amenable to fertilization. Samples of the mucus are taken between 2 and 8 hours after intercourse.
Sometimes called the Sims-Huhner test, the post-coital test has been in use since the 1860s. Though its usefulness has been debated as of late, it is still one of the most popular tests used in fertility clinics today.
Preparing for A Post-Coital Test
Because this type of female infertility test is so intrinsically linked to your reproductive cycle, it is important that you take proper steps in order to prepare for it.
Preparing for the post-coital test is fairly straightforward. Your health care provider will give you more detailed information about what you need to do before the test, though. In general, couples undergoing PCT will need to:
Monitor your basal body temperature (BBT) in order to determine when you are ovulating. Measure your levels of luteinizing hormone (LH) with a urine test. This will also help to determine when you are ovulating. Once you have determined that you are about ovulate, book an appointment for the post-coital test for the following day Have intercourse 2 to 8 hours before your appointment. Do not use lubricant during intercourse, and refrain from douching or tub bathing afterwards.
The necessary preparation required for a PCT are as follows:
monitor your basal body temperature (BBT) in order to assess if ovulation is occurring take a lutenizing hormone (LH) test in order to confirm that ovulation has occurred once you have determined that you are ovulating, book an appointment for a PCT at your fertility clinic intercourse should take place two to eight hours prior to testing; lubricants should not be used and you should avoid douching or tub bathing following intercourse
Testing Procedure
During a post-coital test, your health care provider will insert a metal or plastic speculum into the vagina; this will expose the cervix.
Your fertility specialist will then collect a sample of cervical mucus, which will subsequently be transferred onto a slide for analysis in the laboratory.
Post-Coital Test Results
The results of your post-coital test will generally be available within one to two days. During analysis, your cervical mucus will be assessed for texture and consistency, as well as for the presence of moving sperm.
